I must say it's quite a treat to use. The FOV (approx. 12mm) on my NEX 5N is a refreshing break from 'standard focal lengths that I own. I also like that one can prefocus and just shoot one handed from the hip etc. and get great results. I recently shot a Hindu wedding and the area that the couple were in was pretty small, but very well decorated. The 8mm captured it with excellent results at ASA 800 and f2.8.Corner sharpness even at 2.8 is excellent ( I was pleasantly surprised at this). Note that you can't just leave the lens on all the time as 8mm is something of a specialist lens, and not all pics look good at this focal length. However when used to capture images where you need a really wide view...you won't be disappointed. Excellent results can be obtained by shooting with the camera as level as possible then using a prog. like Hemi fisheye to correct distortion... I had also been watching images taken with, and read reviews of, Samyang 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye (and its many brands) for Sony A-mount. That got me interested in that lens. Since I own two interchangeable cameras (Sony SLT-A55 and Sony NEX-3), and often use all of my A-mount lenses on the NEX (E-mount), I was pretty much getting set on the Fisheye. And last month, before I choose to dive-in, I came across Samyang's announcement for a revised Fisheye lens designed exclusively for Sony E-mount: 8mm f/2.8. The compact design was key to my decision. I chose to gave up the flexibility of using the lens between the two cameras, for portability. Luckily, discovered a 2-hour "lightning sale" on Amazon and picked Rokinon branded version moments before the sale ended, saving at least $100 off on-going prices. The lens, at regular price is a great deal, saving off it, makes... They produce quality lenses for a fraction of the price of more well-known ones. 85/1.4 for $300? 35/1.4 for $500? Awesome! So I was stoked when they announced that they'd release an updated fish-eye lens for the E-mount.Now that I have the lens in my hands, I can say that it's pretty pretty good. It's slightly shorter than the 18-55 E-mount kit lens. I got the black version and it looks quite nice with a red ring. I'm not a technical person but from what I've seen so far, it's quite sharp even wide open at f/2.8. I posted a few samples so you can see the kind of fish-eye effect you'll get with this 8mm lens. I've never had a fish-eye lens before, so I can't really compare it to others. But I think it's a nice piece of glass for the price. It might be a niche lens, but the results can be quite unique and satisfying. |
